In a week marked by fervent discussions on climate action and gender equality, Mayor-Elect Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr showcased her global leadership as she participated in multiple UNGA 78 Meetings and Side Events.
The outgoing C40 Cities Vice Chair for Innovator Cities, a Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Program Alumnus, and an Amujae Leader seized the opportunity to advocate for crucial issues.
A highlight of her participation included speaking at esteemed events such as the SDG Action Event – Local and Regional Governments Forum, the Opening Launch Ceremony of Climate Week NYC, and the Empowering All: Cities Pioneering the Just Energy Transition – C40 Press Conference.
Mayor-Elect Aki-Sawyerr also took part in critical discussions at the C40 Cities Steering Committee Meeting, a press conference alongside global figures like Mike Bloomberg and Mayor Ann Hildago, and the Earthshot Prize Innovation Summit.
Furthermore, she engaged in a roundtable discussion with Bloomberg Philanthropies, COP28 Leadership, and other influential stakeholders to discuss desired outcomes for COP28, with a focus on accelerating subnational climate action.
Her involvement extended to discussions with the Mayors Migration Council, participation in the Global Center for Climate Mobility High-Level Meeting and Panel Discussion, and contributing to the UN Climate Ambition Summit Opening Plenary.
Mayor-Elect Aki-Sawyerr’s commitment to global issues also shone through in her participation in a Global Africa Business Initiative Fireside Chat on building a just and equitable energy future and an EJS Center and Open Society Foundation session dedicated to breaking barriers and creating opportunities for women political leaders.
