The Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr has provided an update on the devastating 40ft container accident that occurred this evening at Abacha Street.
In a post shared on social media, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr stated, “My thoughts and prayers are with the victims of the trailer accident at Eastern Police this evening. There are 16 people in hospital, 1 in critical condition. Two people lost their lives – may their souls rest in peace.”
Abacha Street, historically known as Kissy Street and a vital route to the city center from the east, has long grappled with persistent trading activities despite government efforts to reclaim its thoroughfare.
The Government of Sierra Leone had initiated a crucial rehabilitation project for Sani Abacha Street, aiming to enhance safety, accessibility, and traffic flow.
The overdue makeover sought to address longstanding issues such as potholes and congestion, posing risks to both motorists and pedestrians. However, today’s tragic incident has cast a shadow over these efforts, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive measures to ensure the safety of all residents and visitors on Sani Abacha Street.
