In a devastating incident this evening, a 40ft container toppled over at Sani Abacha Street in Freetown, claiming numerous lives.
The densely populated shopping area, once slated for clearance to ease traffic congestion, now bears witness to a somber scene of loss.
Abacha Street, historically known as Kissy Street and a vital route to the city center from the east, has long grappled with persistent trading activities despite government efforts to reclaim its thoroughfare.
Successive administrations have faced challenges in curbing the trading practices on Abacha Street back. However, rhe Government of Sierra Leone had initiated a crucial rehabilitation project for Sani Abacha Street, aiming to enhance safety, accessibility, and traffic flow.
The commencement of the project on July 10th, 2023, was met with enthusiasm, as images and videos shared on social media highlighted the positive changes underway.
The overdue makeover sought to address longstanding issues such as potholes and congestion, posing risks to both motorists and pedestrians.
However, today’s tragic incident has cast a shadow over these efforts, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive measures to ensure the safety of all residents and visitors on Sani Abacha Street.
