FREETOWN, 22 May 2025 – A senior cameraman with AYV Media Empire, Foday Fofanah, was reportedly assaulted by armed police officers at Model Old Road Junction in Freetown earlier today, leaving him with severe facial injuries.
Eyewitnesses say the incident occurred in broad daylight, shocking bystanders and drawing public attention to the ongoing concerns over police conduct.
According to eyewitness accounts and early reports, Fofanah was allegedly beaten by several officers who claimed they were acting under the direct orders of the Inspector General of Police, William Fayia Sellu.
“They said he was interfering with police operations,” said another witness, Abdul Conteh. “But all he did was film what was happening on the street. That’s his job.”
The Sierra Leone Police have not yet released an official statement. Meanwhile, AYV Media Empire has also not responded to inquiries regarding the incident.
The confrontation has reignited concerns over police brutality and the safety of journalists in Sierra Leone.
As Fofanah receives medical treatment for his injuries, calls for accountability and a thorough investigation are growing across social media and among press freedom advocates.
We can say sorry to our brother.
Police need to treat others the same way like other.
