FREETOWN, Sierra Leone — The Leone Stars have intensified their training ahead of two pivotal 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches, as the national squad refines its conditioning, tactics, and cohesion.
Sierra Leone is set to host Guinea-Bissau on September 4, 2025, before welcoming Ethiopia on September 9, 2025, marking a critical stretch in Group A.
These fixtures offer Sierra Leone a chance to climb the standings in a group that includes heavyweights like Egypt and Burkina Faso, along with Guinea-Bissau, Ethiopia, and Djibouti. Only the group winner qualifies directly for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada; the runner-up may face a grueling inter-confederation playoff.
The Leone Stars have already made a statement this campaign—securing a vital 3-1 win over Guinea-Bissau in March increased their point tally to eight and temporarily lifted them into second place. However, a narrow 0-1 loss to Egypt followed, placing them third behind Egypt and Burkina Faso in the standings.
With momentum growing and national pride on the line, Sierra Leone’s players and technical staff remain optimistic that their rigorous preparation will bear fruit on the pitch as they strive to make a mark on the global stage.
