FREETOWN – The Parliament of Sierra Leone is undergoing major renovations and infrastructure upgrades in preparation for the State Opening of Parliament, scheduled for Friday, 7 August 2026.
Works currently under way include the installation of a new water storage reservoir, a 555 KVA standby generator, a new police station, 10 container offices, and solar panels designed to supply reliable electricity to the parliamentary chamber during sittings. Internal maintenance is also being carried out inside the chamber itself.
At the same time, the Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA) is rehabilitating the roads leading to Parliament to improve access ahead of the ceremony.
Officials say the improvements are intended to ensure the legislature is fully prepared, secure and operational for one of the country’s most important constitutional events.
The State Opening traditionally features the President’s address from the throne, outlining the government’s legislative and policy priorities for the coming session.
The timing comes shortly after Sierra Leone successfully hosted the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government in July 2026, during which major new facilities such as the Julius Maada Bio International Conference Centre were commissioned. The parliamentary upgrades form part of broader efforts to strengthen key national institutions and infrastructure.
Speaker of Parliament Segepoh Solomon Thomas and parliamentary authorities have prioritised readiness for the high-profile occasion, which draws members of the diplomatic corps, government officials and other dignitaries to the historic complex in Freetown.
