The Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr has provided update on the food poisoning incident that occurred today, 18 May 2023 at Mabella community, Freetown.
In a post shared on social media, the Mayor stated that, 72 people from the Mabella community have been admitted at Connaught Hospital after eating food from a cookery seller.
“The victims include men, women and children of all ages. Two of the victims are in the Intensive Care Unit but the vast majority are responding well to treatment,” she added.
Mayor Aki-Sawyerr further noted that the DHMT surveillance team have been deployed in the community and the National Public Health Agency is currently conducting lab tests on the food from the cookery seller.
“The Sierra Leone Police have launched an investigation into the incident,” she added.
“I would like to express my sincere thanks to the Deputy Chief Medical Officer, the Connaught Hospital and DHMT teams, the Eastern and Central Police LUCs and their teams and all responders to this unfortunate incident. We look forward to the results of the tests and investigations and to relevant subsequent actions being taken,” Mayor Aki-Sawyerr concluded.
According to separate report, the two people who were in the ICU due to the food poisoning are now fully responsive and will be moved to the recovery unit soon.
