Kenema, Sierra Leone — Six people, including four females and two males, are feared dead after drowning in the Moa River at Kailodo Beach while celebrating a friend’s birthday on Friday, May 15, 2026.
The victims were residents of the Kpayama community in Kenema. They had gathered at the popular beach spot along the Moa River to mark the birthday of the founder of their local club, referred to as “GF.” What began as a joyful celebration turned into a devastating tragedy when the group encountered difficulties in the water, according to police and eyewitness accounts.
Local residents and fishermen responded swiftly, launching an immediate rescue effort using canoes and fishing nets. Several others in the group managed to swim to safety, though they were reported to be in a state of shock. A formal search and recovery operation, involving Sierra Leone Police and community volunteers, is now underway.
The Moa River serves as a vital transport route and source of livelihood for communities in eastern Sierra Leone, particularly in areas with limited bridge infrastructure. However, it poses significant risks, especially during the rainy season when water levels rise and currents strengthen. Community leaders have described the incident as heartbreaking and have highlighted ongoing safety concerns around river usage.
As of Saturday, May 16, authorities had not yet released the full names of the deceased, and recovery efforts continue. This tragedy has sent shockwaves through the Kpayama community and broader Kenema area, prompting calls for greater awareness of water safety and potential improvements to local infrastructure.
Our thoughts are with the families and friends of the victims during this difficult time.
Further updates will be provided as more details emerge from the ongoing operation.
