The Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA) has announced the suspension of 12 manually operated ferries across rural areas of the country due to high river levels and turbulent water flows during the rainy season.
This suspension typically occurs in July and August to ensure the safety of passengers and maintain the ferries.
In a press release, the SLRA management stated, “The 12 manually operated ferries located in the rural areas of Sierra Leone are normally grounded during the months of July and August, when high river levels and turbulent flows are experienced.”
The ferries affected include those operating in Ribbi, Masimera, Mabanta, Yebele, Tomparie, Kombrabai, Gendema, Manowa, and Mattru.
During this suspension period, SLRA contractors are engaged to carry out maintenance work on the ferries.
“SLRA contractors are engaged during this period to undertake maintenance of the ferries, in readiness for resumption of normal ferry operations in the month of September,” the statement continued.
While the majority of the ferries are grounded, the Bantoro, Kabba, and Manawo ferries will remain operational but will be closely monitored during the rainy season.
The SLRA management reassured the public of its commitment to providing safe and reliable ferry services.
“We wish to assure the public of our commitment to ensuring safe and reliable ferries nationwide,” the statement concluded.
