In the wake of Sunday’s tumultuous assault in Freetown, Chief of Defense Staff, Lt-General PK Lavahun, vehemently denies any link between the attempted coup and former President Koroma.
Lt-General Lavahun, addressing concerns, asserts there is no direct association between the attempted coup and the ex-President.
Additionally, he discloses the arrest of the unit commander at Wilberforce Barrack for interrogation related to the breach into the armory.
“We are still mopping up. Yesterday we conducted a hot pursuit and were able to recover 2 vehicles with arms and ammunition including RPGs and bombs. We know they are using the bush to escape but we will avert that,” he said.
Revealing the identity of the attackers, Lt-General Lavahun discloses that a significant number were reportedly former bodyguards of ex-President EBK (Ernest Bai Koroma).
“We were prepared so we were able to repel the attacks. We shot one assailant known as “Leatherboot” at Murray town with 2 other soldiers who were hiding in the facility. One escaped but was arrested at Murray Town today” Lt. Gen Peter Lavahun said.
Former President Koroma on Sunday reported that a military guard at his residence was shot point blank, and another was taken away during the attack on a military barracks by unidentified gunmen.
Despite not disclosing the shooter, Koroma condemns the attack on the military barracks.
The ongoing investigation has led to the arrest of 13 serving military personnel and 1 civilian thus far.
