The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has issued a stern caution to Principals of Senior Secondary Schools across Sierra Leone regarding their practices of extortion and illegal charges.
In a press release today, the ACC disclosed that they held discussions with school authorities at Integrity House, Tower Hill, Freetown.
The concern arises in light of the recent release of Basic Education and Certificate Examination (BECE) results, as parents and guardians are seeking admissions for their children in Senior Secondary Schools.
The ACC cited Section 128 (3) of the Anti-Corruption (Amendment) Act of 2019, which states that any corrupt activity or practice conducted in educational programs to confer an advantage is considered an offense.
The Deputy Commissioner ACC, Augustine Foday Ngobie, emphasized that these actions contradict the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education’s established policies, which outline approved government charges for services and products in public schools.
The ACC reiterates that school authorities are prohibited from soliciting or accepting bribes or imposing charges outside the Ministry’s approved fee structure.
The Commission issued a strong warning to school authorities, reminding them that if there is substantial evidence of extortion and illegal charges, they will face swift investigation and prosecution.
The public is encouraged to report such activities to the ACC through various office locations or hotlines provided.
The ACC emphasized its unwavering commitment to combating corruption at all levels in Sierra Leone, assuring the public of their dedication to maintaining integrity in the education system.
