Freetown Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr is set to be honoured with the 2021 Lawrence C. Nussdorf Urban Leadership Prize this Friday, April 25th, at the University of Pennsylvania, USA.
Originally scheduled for 2021, the award ceremony was postponed due to COVID-19 restrictions. The long-awaited presentation will now take place during the 20th Annual Urban Leadership Forum, hosted by the Penn Institute for Urban Research.
Mayor Aki-Sawyerr is being recognised for her exceptional contributions to urban sustainability in Freetown.
Among the achievements highlighted in the award citation are the establishment of the city’s first wastewater treatment facility, the digitalization and expansion of the property rate system, and the successful planting and monitoring of 1.2 million trees as part of the #FreetownTheTreeTown campaign.
“This award is dedicated to the amazing Councillors, Freetown City Council staff and members of the Mayor’s Delivery Unit who all work so hard to implement our collective #TransformFreetown #TransformingLives development agenda,” the Mayor stated in response to the announcement.
The recognition underscores the global impact of Mayor Aki-Sawyerr’s leadership and her commitment to sustainable urban development in Sierra Leone’s capital.
