FREETOWN, October 31, 2023 – One of Sierra Leone’s leading mobile network providers, Africell has last week unveiled its cutting-edge Fifth Generation (5G) network.
This landmark event, which took place at the Sea View Lounge, New City Hall in Freetown on Thursday October 2023 , was attended by top government officials, industry leaders, and media representatives.
Distinguished guests included Chief Minister, Dr. David Moinina Sengeh, Minister of Information and Civic Education Chernor Bah, Minister of Communication, Technology and Innovation, Hon. Salima Bah, Chairman of the Board of Directors NatCa Ambassador, Joe Blell, and the Director-General of the National Telecommunications Authority (NaTCA), Mr. Amara Brewah.
Africell’s CEO, Shadi Gerjawi, emphasized the company’s commitment to technological advancement and connectivity. He highlighted Africell’s journey from a Second Generation (2G) network to Fourth Generation (4G), culminating in the rollout of the high-speed 5G technology.
Gerjawi underscored the remarkable speed of 5G, which is 100 times faster than its predecessor, and its vital role in closing the digital divide.
He commended Africell for connecting the unconnected and ensuring access to the digital age’s benefits.
Alongside the 5G network launch, Africell introduced a versatile mobile app accessible via QR code. This app allows users to pay utility bills, conduct various transactions, and enjoy free SMS services.
Gerjawi stated, “Africell’s mission goes beyond telecommunications; it demonstrates our commitment to being a responsible corporate citizen,” praising the company’s contributions to community development projects.
The government, represented by Minister Salima Bah, Chairman Joe Blell, and Director-General Amara Brewah, received gratitude for their unwavering support of Africell’s mission.
Mr. Amara Brewah, NaTCA Director-General, celebrated the introduction of 5G technology as a leap into the digital age, highlighting its potential for economic growth, improved education, healthcare, and governance.
The partnership between mobile network operators and NaTCA has resulted in substantial investments in state-of-the-art technology. Although tariff increases are expected, the improved internet service quality promises to offer substantial value for consumers.
