Freetown – The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr William Fayia Sellu on Wednesday 12 August 2026 received received a donation of ten motorbikes from the Turkish Government via the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TiKA), aimed at bolstering the operational capacity of the Sierra Leone Police (SLP).
The presentation ceremony took place on Wednesday, with IGP Sellu expressing gratitude to Turkey and TiKA for their ongoing support to the Sierra Leone Police.
He highlighted the importance of the donation in enhancing police mobility, which is critical for effective response to security challenges and community policing.
In his remarks, IGP Sellu acknowledged Turkey’s pivotal role in supporting the development of the SLP. He recalled that shortly after his inaugural meeting with Turkish Ambassador His Excellency Yusuf Bukar Rende, Turkey, through TiKA, facilitated a training programme for Sierra Leone Police personnel.
He described such interventions as a testament to Turkey’s commitment to the professional development and operational effectiveness of the police force.
The Police Chief assured both the Ambassador and the Turkish Government of the Sierra Leone Police’s full support for ongoing cooperation.
He added that the motorbikes would be utilised as intended, to boost mobility and operational efficiency, particularly in areas where rapid movement is essential.
Speaking at the event, Turkish Ambassador Yusuf Bukar Rende reaffirmed Turkey’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Sierra Leone. He described the donation as a tangible example of Turkey’s willingness to support Sierra Leone’s security sector, emphasising that the partnership is founded on mutual respect between two sovereign nations.
Ambassador Rende expressed satisfaction with the bilateral relationship and reiterated Turkey’s readiness to explore further avenues of collaboration that would benefit both countries. He also thanked the Sierra Leone Government and police leadership for enabling Turkey’s contribution to the country’s development and security efforts.
The donation of ten motorbikes adds to Turkey’s ongoing support for the SLP, which includes training programmes and institutional development initiatives. The Sierra Leone Police have consistently emphasised the importance of equipping officers with modern tools and logistics to meet emerging security challenges and improve service delivery.
The latest support from TiKA is expected to significantly enhance police mobility, facilitating more rapid and accessible responses to security incidents. It is part of broader efforts to transform the Sierra Leone Police into a more professional and responsive organisation dedicated to serving the public.
