In a significant development on October 26, 2023, the United States government, in collaboration with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative aimed at bolstering citizen participation and public access to vital information in Sierra Leone.
The newly introduced initiative, known as the Building Accountability Systems through Empowered Communities (BASE) partnership, will be executed in conjunction with the Institute for Governance Reforms and a consortium of partners. It will span across several districts, including Western Rural, Moyamba, Karene, Falaba, Tonkolili, and Kono.
This substantial $3.38 million, three-year venture is designed to empower local actors in Sierra Leone, fostering the growth of a stronger and more resilient democracy. It will achieve this by facilitating informed civic organizations and promoting active citizen involvement in local governance and political processes.
Furthermore, the project will enhance the capabilities of local governance institutions, promoting transparency and efficiency in their service delivery.
Mr. Bryan David Hunt, the United States Ambassador to Sierra Leone, has reiterated his nation’s unwavering commitment to the people of Sierra Leone.
He expressed, “The United States will continue to collaborate with Sierra Leone to advance democracy and good governance through enhanced citizen participation. Whether through the Building Accountability Systems through Empowered Communities partnership or our numerous other development initiatives, the United States remains dedicated to supporting the people of Sierra Leone in their pursuit of democracy, health, and prosperity.”
This initiative serves as a testament to the United States government’s steadfast commitment to standing alongside Sierra Leone in advancing the country’s development agenda.
