Freetown, Sierra Leone – On February 6, the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) and the United States Armed Forces commenced their inaugural Defense Country Coordination Meeting (CCM) at the Army Headquarters, Cockerill Barracks in Freetown.
This two-day event aims to outline defense cooperation priorities for the forthcoming years.
The meeting features participation from representatives of U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), U.S. Naval Forces Africa (NAVAF), and the Southern European Task Force Africa (SETAF), alongside their Sierra Leonean counterparts. Discussions are centered on enhancing security collaboration between the two nations.
During the opening ceremony, U.S. Ambassador Bryan Hunt emphasized the significance of this gathering, describing it as a milestone in the shared commitment to a more secure, prosperous, and resilient partnership.
He highlighted that through open dialogue and strategic planning, both nations are working together to address challenges and seize opportunities to ensure long-term security and stability benefiting Sierra Leone, West Africa, and the United States.
This meeting builds upon the growing defense relationship between the U.S. and Sierra Leone. Notably, in September 2024, the RSLAF officially joined the State Partnership Program with the Michigan National Guard, further strengthening military cooperation between the two countries.
The CCM represents a significant step in fortifying the defense partnership, with both nations committed to collaborative efforts that enhance regional security and stability.
