Freetown, February 6, 2025 – The National Secretariat of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) has issued a directive to all party executives, Members of Parliament, and members ahead of the upcoming executive elections, emphasizing strict compliance with party rules and regulations.
In a memorandum signed by the SLPP’s National Secretary General, Umaru Napoleon Koroma, the Secretariat reminded all stakeholders of the importance of integrity, transparency, and fairness in the electoral process.
Strict Adherence to Party Rules
Koroma urged all executives involved in the elections to strictly follow the Rules and Regulations for the Conduct of Executive Elections, which were first published on February 5, 2021. “Any deviation or violation will not be accepted and will be subject to disciplinary action,” he warned.
He further emphasized that all party members interested in contesting must conduct their campaigns ethically, free from manipulation, intimidation, or coercion. “Candidates should promote their platforms positively and respectfully,” the statement read.
Ensuring a Transparent Voting Process
The directive also mandated transparency in the voting process, requiring proper documentation and record-keeping. “All registered members must present a valid identification card—whether a voter ID, national ID, or driver’s license—if an election is conducted in their section or zone,” Koroma stated.
Additionally, district, constituency, and chiefdom chairpersons were reminded to distribute party cards as per the National Executive Council (NEC) resolution of January 18, 2025. “Any deviation from this will not be accepted,” the memo stressed.
No Political Interference from MPs
In a strong message to SLPP Members of Parliament, the Secretariat warned against any interference in the electoral process. “MPs are strictly advised to allow the rules and regulations for the conduct of executive elections to be fully implemented,” Koroma declared.
The Secretariat further cautioned that any election conducted in violation of the established guidelines would be subject to independent oversight. “If necessary, the Secretariat will have no other option but to send an independent body to oversee the election in that area,” Koroma warned.
Disciplinary Measures and Conflict Resolution
The memorandum made it clear that violations of the electoral rules would not be tolerated. “Any member or executive found guilty of breaching these guidelines will be suspended and referred to the Disciplinary Committee for investigation,” the directive stated.
Moreover, all election results must be submitted on the same day, in accordance with the party’s electoral regulations. “Electronic submissions are allowed, with hard copies to follow the next day,” Koroma clarified.
Addressing potential disputes, the Secretariat urged members to report grievances immediately to the designated election committee. “We have established procedures for timely and impartial resolution of conflicts,” Koroma assured.
Call for Unity and Integrity
Concluding the directive, Koroma appealed to all members to uphold the SLPP’s core values. “Unity, respect, and integrity must guide our conduct throughout this election period,” he emphasized.
As the SLPP prepares for its executive elections, the party’s leadership has made it clear that adherence to democratic principles and internal regulations will be paramount in ensuring a smooth and credible electoral process.
