The Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) has confirmed that schools across Sierra Leone will reopen on Monday, September 8, 2025, marking the start of the 2025/2026 academic year.
The announcement follows a breakthrough in discussions between the Government of Sierra Leone and the Sierra Leone Teachers Union (SLTU), which had earlier raised concerns that threatened to delay the reopening.
On September 4, Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh convened a high-level meeting with key education stakeholders, including officials from the Ministry of Education, SLTU, the Teaching Service Commission (TSC), and the Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (CPASS).
The talks focused on issues raised by the Union, particularly the backlog of subsidy payments to schools.
According to government sources, subsidies for the second and third terms have now been disbursed, while dedicated committees have been established to address other outstanding matters.
With the impasse resolved, schools will reopen as scheduled, ensuring continuity in teaching and learning across the country.
The government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting teachers and strengthening the education sector, while commending SLTU, CPASS, TSC, and other stakeholders for their cooperation in safeguarding the future of Sierra Leone’s children.
