Officers of the Transnational Organised Crime Unit (TOCU) of the Sierra Leone Police recovered a quantity of suspected tramadol tablets during a raid on Patton Street in the East End of Freetown.
According to reports shared on social media, a young man died in the course of the operation, while several others were arrested after allegedly disrupting the work of the police team.
Authorities have not yet released the exact amount of tramadol seized, the identities of those killed or detained, or a full account of the circumstances that led to the deaths.
The operation forms part of the ongoing national effort to disrupt the illegal trade and abuse of high-dose tramadol, a substance that has caused widespread concern across Sierra Leone, particularly among young people.
Police say investigations are continuing and further details will be made public in due course.
