Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio on Thursday, September 26, 2023, engaged with the leadership of the Sierra Leone Labour Congress (SLLC).
During the discussions, Max K. Conteh, the Secretary General of the SLLC, emphasized the importance of enhancing the welfare of labor union members. He also stressed the need for a comprehensive salary review to address the economic challenges faced by workers in the country.
President Bio expressed his Government’s commitment to prioritizing the well-being of the nation’s workforce. Under his leadership, workers have already witnessed substantial improvements in their conditions, starting in 2018.
These improvements include a 30% salary increase for teachers, a 50% salary rise for various sectors such as the Military, Police, Fire Force, and Correctional Services, a 50% salary hike for employees at ONS and CISU, a 25% salary increment for workers at the Audit Service, Anti-Corruption Commission, and Statistics Sierra Leone, and a significant 75% salary increase for university lecturers and workers.
The President recognized the concerns raised by the SLLC leadership and assured them that his Government would collaborate with relevant stakeholders to assess their requests.
He also committed to continuing efforts to promote decent work, social justice, and inclusive economic growth throughout Sierra Leone.
