In a recent development, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Brima Kamara issued a stern warning regarding an unauthorized protest scheduled for Monday, September 11.
YACP Kamara emphasized that the police had not received any official application for this demonstration, with all information circulating exclusively on social media platforms.
Highlighting the proper procedure for organizing a protest, ACP Kamara stressed that participants should submit requests to the Inspector General of Police, who would subsequently evaluate and grant permission if deemed appropriate.
To maintain law and order, the police are adopting a two-pronged approach. First, they are cautioning individuals against participating in the unauthorized protest. Secondly, they are prepared to take measures to restore normalcy, including the arrest of anyone who attempts to join the protest.
“We cannot stand idly by while the state descends into chaos,” ACP Kamara declared, reaffirming the police’s commitment to preserving peace and order in Sierra Leone. He also revealed plans for collaboration with the Security Sector to ensure the nation’s stability, although specific details were withheld for security reasons.
In anticipation of the protest, reports indicate that armed police and military patrols were observed in various parts of the capital, Freetown, on Saturday. Security forces are expected to be strategically deployed across the country on Sunday night.
The government has urged citizens to carry on with their daily activities on Monday, emphasizing the potential for protests to turn violent, as seen in a previous demonstration on August 10, which resulted in 25 fatalities and numerous injuries.
