Freetown, 25th September 2024 – The ongoing Court Martial trials surrounding the November 26 coup have revealed further details about Kabba Dumbuya’s involvement in the violent uprising that shook the nation.
Dumbuya, who remains at large, is one of the key figures implicated in the attacks that led to widespread chaos in Freetown.
In previous episodes, the Court Martial proceedings had focused on the roles of other accused individuals, including Staff Sergeant Idrissa Kallon and Sergeant Fofanah Kemoh. Today’s update sheds light on Dumbuya’s direct involvement in the coup.
Kabba Dumbuya was spotted participating in the attack on the Pademba Road Custodial Centre, where he and his accomplices facilitated the release of 2,203 inmates. Among those freed were 14 military personnel awaiting trial for subversion against the state.
Photographic evidence submitted by the prosecution places Dumbuya at the scene, armed with an AK-47 rifle, dressed in blue jeans, a grey shirt, and a maroon cap.
Dumbuya, who once served on the security detail of former President Ernest Bai Koroma, is accused of playing a central role in the coup. While Dumbuya managed to evade capture, other key players faced different fates.
“Leather Boot,” another former security officer, was killed during a confrontation, while “Tiger” (Staff Sergeant Ibrahim Thorlu Bangura) was apprehended, tried, and sentenced to 120 years in prison on multiple charges, including mutiny and murder.
The investigation into Dumbuya’s escape continues, with former President Ernest Bai Koroma also facing charges of treason, harboring fugitives, and conspiracy to overthrow the government. Koroma was arraigned earlier this year and is currently out on bail for medical treatment in Nigeria. His trial is set to resume on November 18, 2024.
As the trial unfolds, more details on the coup and its conspirators are expected to emerge, further painting a picture of the violent attempt to destabilize Sierra Leone.
