In a recent development that has sparked considerable debate within the legislature, the Parliament of Sierra Leone has summoned the Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) following reports of a significant number of students being unable to register for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The summons came after concerns were raised regarding the abrupt closure of the online registration portal managed by the West African Examination Council (WAEC).
Acting Speaker, Honourable Sengepoh Solomon Thomas, has tasked the Minister with providing a detailed account to Parliament, outlining the reasons behind the portal’s closure. This move comes in the wake of a social media video released by Hon. Abdul Karim Kamara, alleging disparities in the registration process, which reportedly affected thousands of students across the country.
During a parliamentary session, Hon. Jabbie, chairman of the Education Committee, contested the claims made in Hon. Kamara’s video, emphasizing that 146,179 candidates had successfully registered for the WASSCE 2024. However, the exact number of students who failed to complete their registration remains unspecified.
Hon. Aaron Koroma, Deputy Leader of the All People’s Congress Party (APC), emphasized the need for a professional and apolitical approach to the issue, citing its significant implications for the nation’s future. Similarly, Hon.
Hawa Siaffa of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) called for professionalism and accountability from school authorities, stressing that students should not be penalized for issues beyond their comprehension.
Adding to the dialogue, Hon. Mohamed Bangura of the APC advocated for an opportunity to thoroughly scrutinize Hon. Kamara’s claims, to ensure a fair and transparent resolution to the matter.
The debate has been adjourned to April 16th, 2024, when further deliberations are expected to take place.
