The Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security has deployed an investigation team after a tragic workplace incident yesterday at Freetown International Airport (Lungi).
The team, headed by Ing. Osman Conteh, is examining the circumstances of the accident and will propose steps to stop similar events from happening again.
Initial findings show that two people died — one Sierra Leonean and one Senegalese national. Two others survived and are receiving treatment at Life Care Hospital in Freetown.
Investigators have already met officials from FB Group, the Turkish firm carrying out construction works on the Julius Maada Bio International Conference Centre (also referred to as the ECOWAS International Conference Centre and related facilities) at the airport. The project includes a congress centre, hotel and presidential villas and forms part of efforts to upgrade infrastructure at Lungi ahead of major regional events.
Ministry officials have also visited the family of the late Sierra Leonean worker to offer condolences and discuss compensation arrangements in accordance with the country’s labour laws.
The investigation is continuing. The Ministry has said it will release further details once the full findings and recommendations are ready.
Workplace safety on major construction sites remains a priority for the Ministry, particularly on high-profile projects that employ both local and foreign workers. Families of the deceased and the wider public are urged to await the official conclusions.
