In a significant development on Thursday, 23rd November 2023, Military Lieutenant Charles Kamara, denoted as Lieutenant C, found himself behind bars as Magistrate Mark Ngegba of Court Nol remanded him in custody.
The charges against Kamara are two-fold, encompassing an alleged murder and a series of drug-related offenses.
Kamara’s legal predicament unfolds with his initial appearance linked to the alleged murder of Bai Kamara. Simultaneously, the military officer is accused of violating the National Drugs Control Act of 2008.
According to the charges, on Monday, 16th October 2023, at No 27 Bailey Street Brookfield, Freetown, Kamara was apprehended in possession of 22 parcels of Cannabis Sativa weighing 30.6 kilograms without lawful authority.
Further accusations detail that on the same date and location, Kamara was found with a loose quantity of Kush weighing 15.6 grams and 3.4 liters of Ecstasy, all without lawful authority. Counts four and five allege possession of high-risk drugs, namely Ecstasy, weighing 3.5 kilograms, and a sachet of precursor chemical Ephedrine intended for drug manufacturing without lawful authority.
The police narrative continues with counts six and seven, asserting that when questioned, the accused claimed to be a stranger.
The subsequent events involve the accused being taken to Makiteh police station, revealing that a friend brought him on a motorcycle. The police, in turn, escorted them to Aberdeen police post and later to New England Ville police post, where the report was filed.
A critical turn in the case arises with the revelation that due to the deceased’s condition, Connaught Hospital referred them to Life Care Hospital and subsequently to Emergency Hospital at Goderich, where Bai Kamara tragically succumbed.
Upon the conclusion of his examination in chief, Magistrate Mark Ngegba denied bail for the accused and adjourned the matter to the 29th November 2023, marking a pivotal moment in the unfolding legal proceedings.
