KAMBIA – Fire broke out at Kolenten Junior Secondary School (JSS) in Kambia, destroying part of the school premises on Sunday morning.
Dramatic photos and videos circulating on social media show intense flames and thick black smoke billowing from a classroom block within the school compound.
The cause of the fire is not yet known. It has also not been confirmed whether there were any injuries or casualties at the time of the incident.
Eyewitnesses say members of the surrounding community rushed to the scene to help put out the fire and prevent it from spreading to other buildings.
The extent of the damage is yet to be officially confirmed by school authorities, the Kambia District Council, or the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE).
Kolenten JSS is one of the main junior secondary schools serving Kambia Town and surrounding chiefdoms. Any significant damage to classrooms, furniture, learning materials or records could disrupt learning for hundreds of pupils who are currently in the first term of the 2026/2027 academic year.
Incidents of school fires have become a growing concern across the country in recent years, with similar fires reported in Freetown, Bo, Kenema and Port Loko, often linked to electrical faults, bush burning, or unattended fires.
This is a developing story. More details will be provided as authorities give an official update.
