Abuja, Nigeria – December 26, 2024: The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has strongly rejected allegations suggesting that Nigeria and other member states are sponsoring terrorism.
The regional bloc expressed deep concern over what it termed as “unfounded accusations,” emphasizing the need for evidence-based dialogue in addressing security concerns.
In a statement issued from its headquarters in Abuja, ECOWAS praised Nigeria’s long-standing commitment to fostering peace and stability within the West African region and beyond.
“For years, Nigeria has been at the forefront of promoting security and peace across the continent,” the statement read. “The recent successes achieved by the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), under Nigeria’s leadership, underscore its dedication to regional security.”
The Commission dismissed claims of Nigeria’s involvement in terrorism as baseless.
“It is inconceivable that a nation with such a generous and magnanimous track record would be implicated as a sponsor of terrorism,” ECOWAS affirmed.
The organization also called for restraint among regional players, urging them to prioritize unity and evidence-based approaches to addressing security challenges.
“We appeal to all states in the region to promote dialogue, stability, and collaboration rather than resorting to unsubstantiated accusations,” the statement concluded.
The ECOWAS leadership reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the collective security and stability of its member states, stressing the importance of fostering trust and cooperation in the face of regional challenges.
