Residents of Sewafe Township in Nimiyama Chiefdom, Kono District, are gripped by fear and tension following the grim discovery of multiple human remains linked to missing persons cases
According to reports, police from the Motema Division responded to a distress call on Friday afternoon after a lifeless body and skeletal remains were found in a bushy area between Gbetwema and Dombadu villages.
The latest victim has been identified as 28-year-old Abdul Turay, popularly known as “Matta,” a commercial motorcyclist from Matonkor Village in Tonkolili District. His body was discovered beside Gbawama Stream, near a blue, unregistered HLX motorcycle he had reportedly been riding.
The incident unfolded when Turay was allegedly hired by a woman traveling toward Pewa village. During the journey, she asked him to stop so she could relieve herself, after which he was ambushed. Family members, concerned after days of no contact, joined the search and made the horrifying discovery.
In the same area, investigators uncovered the skeletal remains of another commercial motorcyclist, Joseph Koroma, alias “Ajero,” who had been missing for approximately five to six months. The findings suggest that what were previously treated as separate missing persons cases may point to a more serious and disturbing pattern of violence in the area.
Local sources indicate that among the remains discovered in connection with these incidents was that of a pregnant woman, deepening the community’s sorrow.
The revelations have left residents of Sewafe township and surrounding areas in shock, with many expressing fears for their safety amid ongoing investigations.
The discoveries sparked immediate anger, with local youths and commercial motorcyclists reportedly protesting by throwing stones at the residence of Paramount Chief George Bockarie Torto. Police intervened to disperse the crowd and restore calm.
Authorities state that the security situation is now under control. Abdul Turay’s body has been transferred to the Koidu Government Hospital Mortuary for a post-mortem examination, while forensic investigations continue into both deaths.
This incident has heightened concerns in the Nimiyama Chiefdom, a region in Sierra Leone’s diamond-rich Kono District that has faced various challenges in the past. Residents are calling for swift justice and enhanced security measures to address what appears to be a targeted threat, particularly to motorcyclists and travelers in the area.
Investigations are ongoing, and more details are expected as police process the scenes and gather evidence.
