Freetown Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr attended the inauguration of Namibia’s first female president, H.E. Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, on Saturday, March 22, 2025.
The ceremony, held in Windhoek, marked a historic milestone for Namibia as it celebrated its 35th anniversary of independence.
Mayor Aki-Sawyerr expressed her gratitude for witnessing this momentous event, stating, “History was made, and I am so grateful that I was able to witness it.” She described the inauguration as “incredibly poignant, moving, and inspirational.”
The event was graced by several prominent African leaders, including Tanzania’s President H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, currently the only other female head of state in Africa. Former Liberian President and Nobel Peace Prize laureate H.E. Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, founder of the Amujae Leadership Program, also attended. Mayor Aki-Sawyerr, an Amujae Leader, accompanied Madam Sirleaf to the ceremony.
In her inaugural address, President Nandi-Ndaitwah emphasized the importance of inclusive development, stating, “It is not good to underplay the role that one segment of the population can play in the social and economic development of a nation. I believe that my being elected as President will inspire many women and girls.”
Mayor Aki-Sawyerr echoed this sentiment, expressing her own inspiration drawn from President Nandi-Ndaitwah’s achievement.
