Sierra Leone Paralympic Team Captain George Wydam delivered an impressive performance on Saturday at the ongoing Paralympic Games in Paris.
Competing in the T57 javelin event against athletes from Brazil, Turkey, Ireland, Argentina, Cape Verde, and host nation France, Wydam showcased his skill in a fiercely contested final.
Despite controversy surrounding his disability classification, Wydam achieved a personal best of 15.07 meters on his third attempt.
The classification dispute, which was raised by the judges, did not overshadow his remarkable performance.
“I am really proud of my performance despite the disability classification controversies with the judges. It is a great pleasure to compete admirably in my third Paralympic Games and represent my country with pride,” Wydam stated after his event.
Wydam also expressed gratitude to the Government of Sierra Leone for its unwavering support, pledging to continue representing the nation on the international stage.
The jury of appeal later rejected the judges’ submission regarding the classification issue.
Wydam ultimately finished 11th in the F57 javelin event, surpassing his previous personal best of 15.8 meters set in Azerbaijan.
