Motema Division, Sierra Leone – Residents of Tefeya Village were alarmed by the discovery of unexploded ordnance (UXO) hidden in bushland, reigniting concerns over the lingering dangers of Sierra Leone’s civil war.
The find, which emerged during the farming season, highlights the ongoing threat posed by remnants of the 1991–2002 conflict.
The presence of such explosives not only endangers lives but also disrupts agricultural activities, a vital livelihood for many in the region. Farmers, often unwittingly, are at risk of triggering these dormant weapons while working their fields, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive clearance efforts.
The 9th Battalion Commander in Koidu has been informed and is expected to oversee the safe removal and disposal of the ordnance.
Meanwhile, local authorities are urging residents to exercise caution and report any additional sightings to prevent potential casualties.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of Sierra Leone’s post-conflict recovery challenges. As the country works to rebuild, the government and humanitarian agencies must expedite demining operations to protect vulnerable communities and support agricultural development in affected areas.
