The Sierra Leone Premier League is set to officially commence on 25th October 2024, following a decision made during the inaugural meeting of the Sierra Leone Premier League Board, chaired by the newly appointed Chairman, Mr. Victor Lewis, at the SLFA Secretariat in Freetown on Thursday 26th September, 2024.
The meeting, which marked the Chairman’s first official engagement with the clubs since his appointment, reached a unanimous agreement to move the original start date from 5th October to 25th October 2024. This adjustment accommodates the national team’s upcoming AFCON qualifiers, scheduled between 11th and 15th October.
The Chairman emphasized the importance of starting the league without further delays, stressing that any disruptions would primarily affect the players.
“We cannot allow another extended pause in our league. It’s the players who will suffer the most,” he stated, calling on all clubs to collaborate and ensure a smooth and timely start, as he reflected on the challenges Sierra Leone football has faced, including a seven-year hiatus in the past.
In addition to the league’s kickoff, the Board provided an update on the transfer window and player registration. The registration process under SLFA Connect—a digital registration platform being used for the first time—began on 1st August 2024 and will close on 21st October 2024, just ahead of the league’s start date. A second phase of registration is scheduled to run from 2nd February 2025 to 3rd March 2025, allowing clubs additional time for both local and international transfers.
Miriam Heroe, TMS Manager, and Sampha Kamara, PLB Secretary, updated the Board on the transfer registration and assured clubs that the process had been streamlined with the Transfer Matching System (TMS), making it easier for teams to complete international transfers during the registration periods. Another update involved the Domestic Club Licensing Online Registration (CLOP), a licensing platform that will be used to assess whether clubs meet the standards to play in the league. The closing date for this process is set for 1st October 2024.
With the registration deadlines established and the league kickoff date confirmed, the Sierra Leone Premier League is poised to resume, promising an exciting season for clubs and fans alike.
