Sierra Leone, September 29, 2023 – In a heartfelt farewell message to the fifth contingent of the Sierra Leone Police Formed Police Unit (FPU-5), slated to depart for the African Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) on October 1st, 2023, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. William Fayia Sellu, urged them to demonstrate their year-long preparatory training in the Mission theatre.
FPU-5, as stated by the IGP, has earned the highest praise from the UN/AU assessment team, who labeled them the best they have ever assessed. Mr. Sellu emphasized, “To whom much is given, much is expected,” underscoring the contingent’s responsibility.
Speaking about their upcoming mission in Somalia, Mr. Fayia Sellu highlighted the SLP’s FPU as an exceptionally diligent and dedicated team, noting their distinction as the only contingent equipped with top-notch equipment.
Reflecting on the extensive preparatory training, the IGP praised the women within the unit for their endurance and professionalism during their training period.
Continuing his address, Mr. Sellu stressed the importance of loyalty to the institution and maintaining the highest standards of discipline while deployed in the Mission theatre.
He reminded them that they represent not only themselves but also their families, institution, and the nation. “We would not stand for anything that tarnishes these reputations,” he firmly stated, encouraging them to act as a united front rather than as fragmented individuals.
The IGP also advised the contingent to maintain regular contact with their families during their mission, acknowledging the strain that distance and financial changes can place on family dynamics. He sternly cautioned against any form of indiscipline and assured them of his commitment to staying informed about their conduct through their Contingent Commander.
In closing, Mr. Sellu encouraged the contingent to quickly adapt to their new environment and remain vigilant and alert at all times.
Prior to the IGP’s address, other high-ranking officers including Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Braima-Jah Esq, AIG Memunatu Konteh-Jalloh, AIG Sahr Senesi, and Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Lahai, provided additional guidance on discipline, integrity, professionalism, and the importance of teamwork during their mission in Somalia.
