The Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs has stated that they are deeply saddened by the reported death of a 12-year-old girl on the highway between Baiima and Benduma in Kailahun District on May 16, 2024.
In a press release issued today, the Ministry extended its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
“We are working closely with our child protection partners and local authorities, including the Sierra Leone Police, to investigate this tragedy. Reports indicate the girl was sexually assaulted before her death,” the Ministry stated.
The Government of Sierra Leone is committed to protecting children’s rights, as outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, and the Child Rights Act of 2007.
“We urge the community to cooperate with the police by providing any relevant information that could help with the investigation and lead to legal action against the perpetrators,” they noted.
