Freetown – Vice President Dr Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, representing President Dr Julius Maada Bio, has concluded a visit to the BGP Offshore Seismic Oil and Gas Exploration vessel at the Queen Elizabeth II Quay, where he received updates on a landmark offshore survey aimed at unlocking Sierra Leone’s energy potential.
The briefing was led by GeoPartners Limited Director Jim Gulland, who outlined the progress and findings of the GPSL25 3D Seismic Geophysical Survey.
Conducted between June and August 2025, the operation covered 2,900 square kilometres of Sierra Leone’s offshore basin using three specialised vessels, generating high-resolution data to assess oil reserves.
Gulland highlighted strict adherence to environmental safeguards and commended government support for the project.
Vice President Jalloh described the survey as “a milestone achievement” that could mark a turning point in Sierra Leone’s pursuit of energy independence.
He pledged government commitment to acting on the findings, particularly on maritime security, and encouraged investment in the sector to create jobs and boost revenue.
Petroleum Directorate Director General Foday Mansaray revealed the basin is believed to hold up to 30 billion barrels of oil, with FA Oil’s plots accounting for an estimated 10 billion barrels. Summary results are expected within six weeks, with full analysis to follow within a year.
