As part of his ongoing efforts to improve healthcare services for police personnel nationwide, Inspector General of Police (IGP) William Fayia Sellu on Saturday, March 29, 2025, officially unveiled a new health centre in Kono District.
The facility aims to provide essential medical services to police officers, their families, and the surrounding community.
During the unveiling ceremony, IGP Sellu emphasized the importance of ensuring the well-being of police personnel, noting that effective service delivery is closely tied to the welfare of officers.
He acknowledged the long-standing challenges police personnel have faced in accessing quality healthcare and highlighted significant improvements under his leadership. Among these, he cited the transformation of the Police Hospital in Kingtom into a teaching hospital and a strategic partnership with the Spanish-based Surgeons in Action Foundation, which has conducted over 700 free surgical procedures for both police officers and civilians.
To further ease medical challenges, IGP Sellu stated that healthcare facilities have been established in all regional headquarters and key locations, including Lungi, Mattru, and now Kono. He reaffirmed his commitment to enhancing the health and well-being of police personnel across the country.
The Local Unit Commander (LUC) for Kono, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Augustine Kabia, expressed his motivation for initiating the project, citing the dire healthcare challenges faced by police personnel in the district.
He recounted a similar initiative he undertook in Mattru Jong, where he previously served as LUC, and reiterated his dedication to addressing medical needs within the force.
Dignitaries at the event, including Chief Kumasi of Nimikoro Chiefdom, praised IGP Sellu for his leadership and commitment to the welfare of Kono police personnel.
The chief expressed gratitude for the consideration given to Kono natives in the police force, referencing the recent appointment of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) Sahr Yomba Senesi, who succeeded retired DIGP Aiah Edward Samadia.
He also acknowledged Director of Operations Dr. John Martin Senesie as another proud representative of Kono in the police hierarchy.
The ceremony concluded with the symbolic cutting of the ribbon, marking the official opening of the health centre. Following the event, IGP Sellu and his entourage proceeded to a town hall meeting with local stakeholders at the Fellie Faboe Hall in Tankoro, where further discussions on community-police collaboration took place.
