In a solemn address to the nation, President Julius Maada Bio addressed the recent security breach that unfolded in Sierra Leone on Sunday.
The incident involved an attack on the Military Barracks at Wilberforce and the Male and Female Correctional Facilities.
President Bio stated, “Fellow Sierra Leoneans, in the early hours of this morning, there was a breach of security at the military barracks at Weaver Force in Freetown.”
He continued, revealing that the attackers targeted the military armory and other locations in Freetown, including the November Road Correctional Center, resulting in prisoner escapes.
The President assured the nation that a combined team of government security forces swiftly responded, apprehending most of the attackers and restoring calm.
He emphasized ongoing security operations and investigations, promising accountability through due process for those responsible.
Acknowledging the bravery and dedication of the armed forces, police, and all involved in quelling the disturbance, President Bio expressed gratitude, saying, “Their commitment to the defense of our democracy deserves our deepest gratitude.”
He thanked citizens for complying with security measures and urged continued vigilance and cooperation with security forces.
“In times like this, we are reminded of the importance of national unity,” the President remarked.
He called on all citizens to resist fear and division, emphasizing the strength derived from unity.
President Bio urged political leaders, traditional leaders, civil society, and citizens to collaborate in preserving the nation’s peace.
“As your Commander-in-Chief, I want to assure everybody who is resident in Sierra Leone that we have overcome this challenge,” President Bio declared.
He concluded the address with a call for solidarity, expressing confidence that the nation would continue on the path of progress and development.
“May God bless Sierra Leone and its resilient people. Long live the Republic of Sierra Leone,” President Bio concluded.
