In a significant move, Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio has taken decisive action by dismissing Lahai Lawrence Leema from his role as Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs.
Leema, who has been embroiled in controversies during his tenure, faced allegations of involvement in a covert operation that led to the abduction and killing of youths suspected of participating in the August 10th protests.
President Bio has appointed Moriba Koroma, a figure known by the alias ‘Agbao,’ as the new Kenema District Chairman of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP). This appointment is seen as part of the President’s efforts to bring a fresh perspective and leadership to the party.
Lahai Lawrence Leema’s removal comes after a thorough investigation conducted by a Special Committee established by President Bio. The committee reported that Leema did not participate in the investigation despite repeated invitations.
In response to these allegations, Leema claimed that he was not properly informed about his role in the committee and expressed his belief that this was an attempt to tarnish his reputation.
During his tenure, Leema had faced public scrutiny and accusations related to his actions on August 10th, when he encountered a violent attack on his vehicle, resulting in the death of one of his security personnel. He described the incident as a personal attack, involving roadblocks and stone pelting, which severely damaged his vehicle.
The Office of the President at State House recently announced a series of new appointments, signaling President Bio’s commitment to enhancing various sectors of the government.
Notable among the appointments is Mr. Moriba Koroma, who now assumes the role of Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, a position with significant responsibilities and challenges.
These appointments reflect President Bio’s determination to fortify governmental departments and drive progress in Sierra Leone. The selected officials, including Mr. Mohamed Haji-Kella and Ms. Yema Mimi Soba-Stephens, are expected to play vital roles in advancing the country’s development goals.
