Freetown, Sierra Leone — A former Closed Protection Officer of the Sierra Leone Police, Alimamy Fofonah, has been released from custody after spending more than two years behind bars on a murder charge that was eventually dropped for lack of prosecution.
Hon. Justice Leonard Taylor of the High Court in Freetown ordered Fofonah’s discharge on Thursday, December 4, 2025, bringing an end to a case that began over 28 months ago when the accused first appeared before the Magistrate Court.
Fofonah had been accused of shooting one of his personal errand boys in Jui, outside Freetown. He has consistently maintained his innocence, claiming the fatal incident happened during an attempted robbery and that his weapon discharged accidentally while struggling with attackers.
Speaking after his release, Fofonah said he had endured significant personal and financial challenges, including going without a salary from the Sierra Leone Police since January 2024.
He expressed hope of being reinstated, noting that he had never received a formal dismissal letter. He also thanked the Legal Aid Board (LAB) for securing his freedom and said he was eager to reunite with his family in Masiaka.
LAB Executive Director, Ms. Fatmata Claire Carlton-Hanciles, welcomed the court’s decision, describing it as a fresh start for Fofonah.
She encouraged him to prioritize his health and assured that the Board would review his concerns regarding rejoining the police force.
She also urged members of the public to remain law-abiding during the festive period, reaffirming LAB’s continued commitment to providing justice for vulnerable citizens. Fofonah’s case was handled by Legal Aid Counsel Morrison Karimu.
