Freetown – In a sharp rebuke to repeated absences, Magistrate Mustapha Braima Jah has directed that one of the sureties in the high-profile fraud case involving Admire Bio-Jalloh and her husband Dauda Jalloh be taken into custody.
The couple failed to appear in court for the second consecutive time on Thursday, prompting strong objections from the prosecution despite the defense’s plea for leniency.
State Counsel Isaac Sesay urged the magistrate to probe the defendants’ absence, noting that the complainant has attended every scheduled hearing without fail.
He described the no-shows as disrespectful to the court and emphasized that the matter involves serious criminal allegations requiring the physical presence of both accused persons.
Defense counsel S.S. Kai told the court that Admire Bio-Jalloh remains in a state of bereavement and is suffering from psychological trauma, which has affected her ability to attend.
He appealed for the court’s understanding and assured magistrates that both defendants would appear on the next adjourned date.
The prosecution firmly rejected the request, arguing that such conduct undermines the justice system.
“This is a criminal offense,” Sesay stressed, pointing out that only three sureties were present in court instead of the required four (two for each defendant).
He highlighted the consistent presence of the complainant, who is seeking justice, and warned that influential individuals must not be allowed to treat the court with levity.
Sesay further requested the issuance of a bench warrant and urged the court to protect its authority, stating that justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done. Allowing such behavior, he added, risks bringing the entire justice system into disrepute.
In response, the defense noted that the missing surety was unwell and should not be compelled to attend court in poor health.
Magistrate Jah reminded the defense of the gravity of the charges and warned that the court would no longer tolerate repeated absences.
“Both defendants must always be present,” he stated firmly.
The case has been adjourned to Thursday, 30th July 2026.
