FREETOWN – The National Telecommunications Authority (NatCA) has renewed its warning to the public, urging heightened vigilance against the rising tide of online scams targeting individuals and businesses across Sierra Leone.
The authority stressed that cyber fraud is not limited to any single institution but forms part of a broader global challenge that demands collective awareness and responsible online behaviour.
NatCA specifically cautioned citizens against clicking on suspicious or fraudulent links shared via email, text messages, social media and other digital platforms.
Cybercriminals routinely deploy these deceptive links to harvest personal data, seize control of accounts and execute financial fraud, the authority said. Members of the public are therefore advised to carefully verify the authenticity of any online content before responding or sharing sensitive information.
Under Director General Amara Brewah, NatCA reaffirmed its commitment to consumer protection through ongoing public education and stronger cybersecurity awareness programmes.
The authority said it continues to pursue measures designed to foster a safer digital environment while defending the interests of telecommunications users nationwide.
Scammers constantly refine their methods, NatCA noted, making sustained public alertness essential. Citizens were urged to rely exclusively on verified information sources, refrain from engaging with suspicious communications, and report suspected fraud without delay to the relevant authorities.
The authority added that it will keep working with partner agencies to combat cybercrime and build greater confidence in Sierra Leone’s digital ecosystem.
Individual caution, it concluded, remains one of the most effective defences against internet fraud.
