In a significant inauguration ceremony held on Friday, October 27, 2023, the newly elected Mayor, Chairpersons, and councilors from the North-West Region, which includes Port Loko, Kambia, and Karene, took their official oaths of office.
The ceremony, marking the return of the main opposition APC (All People’s Congress) to elective state institutions, took place at the District Council of Port Loko City.
The honorable Vice President, Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, led the proceedings where all the duly elected candidates successfully swore in.
In his address, Vice President Jalloh emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation among elected councilors from different political backgrounds, including APC, SLPP (Sierra Leone People’s Party), and NGC (National Grand Coalition), to work towards fulfilling the development aspirations of the region.
Vice President Jalloh urged everyone to come together, highlighting the shared values of peace and unity. He drew parallels to the fact that people of different backgrounds worship together in the same mosques and churches.
As the Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Decentralization and Local Governance, the Vice President reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting the work of local councils and municipalities, with a simultaneous focus on addressing their delivery challenges.
Resident Minister Umaru Bond Wurrie expressed his commitment to collaborating closely with the council chairmen to enhance the region’s development, expressing his anticipation that the region would thrive under their leadership.
Following the ceremony in Port Loko, Vice President Jalloh will spend the night in the Bombali District, where he is scheduled to officiate at the inaugural ceremony of local councils in the northern region on Saturday morning.
