In a bid to enhance the adoption of Biometric National ID Cards, the National Civil Registration Authority (NCRA) has issued a directive urging the public to prioritize compliance with this statutory requirement.
According to a recent Public Notice by the NCRA, collaboration with key institutions like the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) and the Office of National Security (ONS) is underway to implement a Cabinet Directive ratified by Parliament in March 2022. This directive mandates the mandatory linkage of Identification Cards (National, Non-National, and ECOWAS) with the National Identification Number (NIN) for accessing various services, including financial transactions, vehicle registration, recruitment processes, and more.
Effective March 31, 2024, individuals are advised to obtain applicable Identification Cards from designated NCRA offices or other centers across the country. While National and Non-National ID Cards are mandatory, the ECOWAS ID Card is optional.
To ensure compliance, the NCRA and the Security Sector will jointly enforce this directive, emphasizing the importance of reliable identification and consistent personal information for all residents, regardless of citizenship status.
Abdul Cauker, the National Security Coordinator, stressed the significance of National Identity Cards in accurate individual identification and national security maintenance. Similarly, William Sellu, the Inspector General of Police, highlighted the importance of standardized identification in law enforcement operations.
Residents are encouraged to initiate the ID registration process promptly to avoid last-minute rushes. The NCRA has established registration centers nationwide, including specific offices in easily accessible locations and mobile units for remote areas.
For organizations and institutions, specialized corporate services are available, and interested parties can inquire about these services through provided contact numbers or email.
By embracing ID Cards, Sierra Leoneans are expected to contribute to a more connected, transparent, and prosperous nation.
Good luck 🙂
