Freetown, Sierra Leone – August 7, 2025 –The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Meteorological Agency (SLMet), has issued a public warning ahead of anticipated heavy rainfall across the country between August 5 and 9, 2025.
According to forecasts from the African Centre of Meteorological Applications for Development (ACMAD) and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Sierra Leone is expected to receive rainfall amounts ranging from 100mm to 150mm during the forecast period.
The alert forms part of a broader regional outlook that includes several West and Central African nations such as Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, Mali, and Cameroon.
The agencies are urging citizens, especially those in flood-prone areas, to take necessary precautions. Residents are advised to relocate to higher ground where necessary, keep waterways and gutters clear, and avoid walking or driving through floodwaters.
“People must stay alert and heed updates through our official radio, television, and social media platforms,” the joint advisory stated.
For emergencies, the public is encouraged to contact NDMA through its toll-free hotline 119, available on all mobile networks.
Authorities say they are monitoring the situation closely and will issue further advisories as needed to safeguard lives and property.
