The Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security has in a public notice issued today announced that they have initiated an investigation following a tragic occupational accident at Queen Elizabeth Quay in Cline Town on June 2, 2024.
The incident involved John Julius Conteh, an employee of the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), who was killed by a container machinery while on duty.
In an official statement, the Ministry confirmed, “We are currently investigating the incident as stipulated under Part VII, sections 38 and 39 of the Factory’s Act 1974, which pertains to the notification and investigation of accidents and industrial diseases.”
Preliminary findings suggest that MSC management did not adhere to legal reporting requirements.
“The accident was not reported to the Ministry in accordance with section 15 of the Workmen’s Compensation Act and section 38 of the Factory’s Act 1974,” the statement added.
The Ministry emphasized its commitment to ensuring compliance with labor laws. “We are working closely with MSC to make sure all necessary legal protocols are followed,” a spokesperson said.
“The public can be assured that we will address this incident thoroughly within the framework of Sierra Leone’s labor laws, and updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.”
