Amid rising tensions and misinformation surrounding the upcoming Motor Drivers’ Union elections, the Minister of Employment, Labour and Social Security, Mohamed Rahman Swaray, has intervened in a bid to ensure a peaceful and fair process.
The Minister separately engaged with both incumbent and aspiring presidents to address the disputes threatening the integrity of the elections.
Minister Swaray emphasized his commitment to an inclusive election where all participants would feel confident in the process’s fairness and transparency.
“We want to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful election,” he assured both parties during their meetings. He urged them to prioritize peace and maintain it before, during, and after the elections.
Acknowledging the unresolved issues and the heated atmosphere, Minister Swaray directed for a postponement of the elections. He recommended this delay to allow time for the disputes to be resolved and to establish a clear and agreed-upon roadmap for the election process.
“The peace and stability of your Union should be very important to you, as it is to the Government,” he stressed, highlighting the need for unity within the Union.
As the Motor Drivers’ Union plans to hold its election later this month, the Minister’s call for a postponement underscores the significant disagreements within the Union, particularly among the factions of aspiring candidates.
His intervention aims to pave the way for a more harmonious, transparent, and unified election, ensuring that all members feel their voices are heard and respected in the process.
