New York, USA – Continuing her engagements during UN Climate Week, Mayor of Freetown Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr participated in the High-Level Solutions Dialogue on Early Warning and Extreme Heat Solutions, hosted by the Office of the UN Special Adviser on Climate Action.
Speaking as a city leader experiencing the direct impacts of extreme heat, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr highlighted the urgent need for cities to adopt comprehensive strategies to protect residents and strengthen resilience.
During her address, the mayor emphasized the importance of integrated planning that connects climate risk, urban development, and social protection—identifying this as a key barrier to scaling investments in heat-risk solutions.
She also expressed pride in championing C40’s forthcoming Cool Cities Accelerator, a program aimed at helping cities worldwide tackle rising urban temperatures.
Mayor Aki-Sawyerr further contributed to Climate Week NYC by delivering the keynote statement at the Hub Live event on “From Volatile to Viable – The New Playbook for Energy Security.”
Her remarks underscored the critical intersection of climate action and sustainable energy policies, positioning Freetown and other global cities at the forefront of tackling climate challenges.
