Freetown, Sierra Leone — Freetown Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr announced the inauguration of the Kroo Bay Municipal Primary School, a newly built facility dedicated to enhancing educational opportunities in one of the city’s most vulnerable communities.
“Today, I was absolutely thrilled to commission the Kroo Bay Municipal Primary School,” Aki-Sawyerr shared on social media, noting that the construction was made possible by funding from Sustain for Life and implemented with the support of the Freetown City Council and the Sierra Leone Autistic Society.
Located on the site of a former community center where only a single-room, makeshift school once stood, the new school offers a much-improved learning environment.
The two-story building includes 10 classrooms, a computer room, staff facilities, toilets, and a canteen. With space for 300 students, 180 pupils have already enrolled.
“This project is a significant step forward in FCC’s Transform Freetown – Transforming Lives 2024-2028 Development Plan,” Aki-Sawyerr highlighted.
The initiative falls under the city’s Human Capital Development cluster, which aims to strengthen early childhood development, basic education, and skills training in underserved communities.
In her remarks, the mayor also emphasized the role of the school in Freetown’s broader agenda for improving informal settlements.
“It is a vital addition to our efforts in upgrading the living and learning conditions in these areas,” she said.
