Freetown, May 18, 2025 — In response to the ongoing Mpox outbreak, which has now recorded 2,559 cumulative cases across Sierra Leone, the Government of Sierra Leone has intensified its containment efforts with the establishment of a new Mpox Treatment Center at the Police Training School (PTS) in Hastings.
The facility, inspected today by the Deputy Minister of Health, Dr. Charles Senesie, and the Executive Director of the National Public Health Agency (NPHA), Prof. Foday Sahr, marks a significant shift from home-based care to facility-based care. The inspection team, including technical experts, assessed the center’s readiness to manage and treat confirmed cases, ensuring all safety and care protocols are in place before patient admissions commence today, May 18.
The treatment center, repurposed specifically for Mpox management, comprises five buildings, each with 10 rooms containing 19 beds — totaling a full capacity of 950 beds. Initially, 400 beds will be available to allow for a phased intake of patients, providing operational flexibility and enhanced care delivery.
Speaking during the inspection, Dr. Senesie reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing the outbreak: “This center is a testament to our dedication to containing the Mpox outbreak and ensuring those affected receive high-quality care in a safe environment.”
The facility will also provide patients with essential hygiene supplies throughout their treatment period, reinforcing government efforts to uphold patient welfare and minimize the risk of further transmission.
With the Western Area (Urban and Rural) and Bombali District experiencing the highest case numbers, authorities urge the public to remain vigilant, report suspected cases, and comply with ongoing health advisories.
The Ministry of Health and NPHA continue to lead the national response, emphasizing preparedness, public safety, and the delivery of efficient care during this public health emergency.
