In a tragic incident early Monday, an oil terminal in Guinea’s capital, Conakry, was hit by a powerful explosion, leaving several people feared dead and injured, according to a statement from a senior police officer.
Confirming the grim toll, the officer stated, “Yes, there are deaths and injuries.” The blast, which occurred in the Kaloum district in downtown Conakry, had a devastating impact, shattering windows in nearby homes and compelling hundreds to evacuate the area, as reported by a correspondent from Reuters.
A huge fire and billowing black smoke can be seen from miles away as firefighters rushed to the area, while several tanker trucks hastily left the depot, escorted by soldiers and police.
A spokesman for the government of Guinea did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
